On the basis of the Vishva Jain Sangathan, Delhi, the Chandigarh state government has declared a gazette holiday on occasion of Mahavir Jayanti on 19 April, 2016, earlier this holiday was notified on 20 April 2016. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had approved a proposal to change the date on the basis of a representation of Vishva Jain Sangathan, Delhi, A spokesperson informed to media.
Mahavir Jayanti is an auspicious day for the Jain religion; celebrate the birth of Lord Mahavir. This day also known as Mahavir Janma Kalyanak, twenty fourth and the last Tirthankara of the present period.
As per Jain texts, Lord Mahavira was born in 599 BCE, thirteenth day of the bright half of the moon in the Chaitra Monthi in Vaishali City. He was the son of King Siddartha of Kundgraam and Queen Trishala. During their childhood, he was called as ‘Vardhamana’. He is the founder of the modern Jain religion.
During this occasion, Jain people give a traditional bath called the “abhisheka” to the Lord Mahavira, most of the member belongs to the Jain Dharma, do some sort of Charitable act on this day. The day is often marked by organizing mass celebration with elephants, horse-carts and camel-carts, and in many Jain Temples throughout India.
