“That’s what I want” – how Matthew Perry wished to be remembered

Matthew Perry was one of the best loved actors of his generation, with millions of fans still watching his performances to this day.

And later this month, many will be marking the first anniversary since his tragic death last year.

The Friends star was found dead in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home on 28 October 2023, and was subsequently followed by a lengthy investigation.

There was no apparent foul play suspected at the time, however, on 15 August this year, five people were arrested, three of whom have reached a plea agreement.

Those arrested included medical doctors, Perry’s assistant, and alleged dealer, Jasveen Sangha.

US Attorney Martin Estrada said the defendants ‘knew what they were doing was wrong’ and ‘took advantage’ of Perry’s known addiction issues.

US prosecutors have described Sangha as the ‘Ketamine Queen’, whose name has come up on multiple occasions during the investigation.

Authorities allege that it was 41-year-old Sangha who sold Perry the drugs that led to his death.

She is accused of selling 50 vials of ketamine, which she knew could be deadly, to the actor for approximately $11,000 (£8,550).

Estrada described Sangha’s Hollywood home as a ‘drug-selling emporium’, the indictment alleging she ‘only deal[s] with high end and celebs’.

Almost one year ago, NBC – which aired Friends – confirmed the tragic passing of the beloved actor.

In a statement, they wrote: “He brought so much joy to hundreds of millions of people around the world with his pitch-perfect comedic timing and wry wit. His legacy will live on through countless generations.”

As the world paid tribute to the actor, a heartbreaking clip resurfaced of Perry explaining how he would want to be remembered.

The interview came as part of the press tour for his memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir, which was released in 2022.

When asked how he’d like to be remembered, Perry said: “I would like to be remembered as somebody who lived well, loved well, was a seeker and his paramount thing is that he wants to help people.

“That’s what I want.”

Reacting to the resurfaced clip after his death, one fan wrote: “And we’ll make sure you’ll be remembered that way.”

“I’m still unsure how to take this news. Rest in Peace, Matthew! You gave comfort to diverse of generations, blessed us with laughter, stayed with us on our good and bad days. I hope you went to a better place. Thank you for giving us Chandler Bing,” said another, while a third said they were left ‘speechless’ by the news.

His Friends co-star and on-screen wife, Courtney Cox, recently revealed to CBS Sunday Morning that Perry ‘visits [her] a lot’.

“He visits me a lot, if we believe in that,” she said.

“I feel like there are a lot of people that are — I think that guide us. I do sense, yeah, I sense Matthew’s around for sure.”
