A video that appears to show an altercation between Labour MP Mike Amesbury and a man is now a ‘matter for the police’, according to Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson.
The government official commented on the incident after she was questioned if the Labour Party would be investigating the incident, which took place in Cheshire.
Footage posted on X went viral, as Amesbury could be seen shouting and swearing at a man who was lying on the ground in Frodsham town centre.

He can be heard shouting: “You won’t threaten the MP ever again, will you?”
The Labour member for Runcorn and Helsby was identified by those around the incident as well, which happened in the early hours of Saturday morning (26 October).
On BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, Phillipson said: “Mike Amesbury has himself gone to the police. Cheshire police are now investigating the matter, I think it’s important they are now allowed to get on and do their job.
“It is right now the police look into this matter, investigate and decide what action, if any, is required.”
A Labour Party representative also stated: “We are aware of an incident that took place last night. We understand that Mike Amesbury MP approached Cheshire Police to report what happened this morning himself and that he will cooperate with any inquiries they have.”

Amesbury said on his Facebook page: “Last night, I was involved in an incident that took place after I felt threatened on the street following an evening out with friends.
“This morning, I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened during the incident.
“I will not be making further public comment but will, of course, co-operate with any inquiries if required by Cheshire Police.
“I remain fully committed to working hard for the people of Runcorn and Helsby, and am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community.”
Cheshire Police said: “At 02.48 BST on Saturday 26 October police were called to reports of an assault in Frodsham.
“A caller reported he had been assaulted by a man in Main Street. Enquiries are ongoing.”
On Friday (25 October), the MP posted on social media about attending a meeting with residents in his constituency about policing and community safety.
A 56-year-old man was convicted last July of stalking the MP at his office in Frodsham, where he asked guards about the level of security at the building.
