Home Alone and Schitt’s Creek star Catherine O’Hara revealed one ‘horrific’ line she struggled to get through while working with Macaulay Culkin on their beloved Christmas movie.

Millions of people will be watching O’Hara and Culkin get back together on their screens in the next few days in the form of a Home Alone Christmas rewatch, but the pair actually reunited in real life in December 2023, when Culkin was honored with a star on the Walk of Fame.

O’Hara joined fellow actor Natasha Lyonne to give a speech at the ceremony and she became emotional as she talked about her former on-screen son, who was just 10 years old when he worked with O’Hara on Home Alone.

O’Hara described Culkin as the ‘dearest thing’, before going on to share a memory she had of their time on set together.

Recalling one scene in which she had to ‘drag [Culkin’s character] upstairs to sleep in the attic because he’d misbehaved, and… he’s mouthing off about the family’.

In the scene, a cheesed-off Kevin says: “I don’t want to see you again for the rest of my life, and I don’t want to see anybody else, either.”

His mom then hits back: “I hope you don’t mean that – you’d feel pretty sad if you woke up tomorrow morning and you didn’t have a family.”

Remembering the movie scene, O’Hara admitted that she struggled to get through her next line.

She recalled: “And he said, ‘no I wouldn’t,’ and I was supposed to say, ‘Then say it again, maybe it’ll happen’.

“I can’t tell you how much that killed me. I could not wrap my head around saying something so horrific to this beautiful child.”

O’Hara went on to point out that she wasn’t actually a mother herself at the time of filming, before joking that she had ‘no idea’ about the kinds of things that would come out of her mouth when she did have her own kids.

The actor concluded her speech by praising the sense of humour Culkin had even at a young age, saying: “It’s a sign of intelligence in a child and a key to surviving life at any age. From what I see, you have brought that sense of sweet yet twisted, yet totally relatable, sense of humour to everything you have chosen to do since Home Alone.”

Home Alone was, is, and always will be a beloved global sensation,” she continued. “The reason families all over the world can’t let a year go by without watching and loving Home Alone together is because of Macaulay Culkin. Yes, he had a most excellent script and a wonderful director. But it is Macaulay’s perfect performance as Kevin McCallister that gave us that little every boy on an extraordinary adventure.”
