Actress from Stephen King movie on Netflix reveals how ‘brutal’ scenes that made people almost pass out were filmed

The star of a Stephen King movie adaptation with a scene so ‘disturbing’ people almost passed out has explained exactly how the gruesome sequence was shot.

Once thought to be ‘unfilmable’ by directors, the horror was released in 2017 and is considered among the best King film adaptations of all time.

That is really saying something, when you take into account at least the 60 films and 50 shows out there based on his iconic horror novels.

This movie, which is available to stream now on Netflix, was critically acclaimed by critics and racked up an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 91 percent.

We’re, of course, talking about Gerald’s Game, which stars Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood as a couple who suffer the consequences of a sex game gone wrong.

Based on the 1992 book of the same name, the movie features graphic scenes which made people feel ‘sick’ and others almost pass out.

Warning: This next part contains graphic descriptions and major spoilers for Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game.

After her husband dies during foreplay, Gugino’s character Jessie ends up handcuffed to the bed, becoming increasingly delirious.

This ultimately culminates in Jessie having set herself free by degloving her own hand.

Smashing a glass left on the bedside table, she cuts a Y-shape incision up her wrist and into her palm, forcing her hand down through the cuff as the skin peels upward, almost like a latex glove peeling off.

And speaking to Bloody Disgusting, Gugino confessed it was a ‘brutal’ sequence to perform.

She explained: “It was technically challenging because when we wanted shots of my hand and face together, and there were quite a few of those, we had to have the cuff tight enough so that it didn’t look like it was easy to pull out of it.

“So we basically did it as tight as I could handle it which meant that it was really painful but could actually get through so it was a brutal sequence to perform.”

The star added: “They did such an amazing job with that prosthetic. It was all completely worth it.

“I’m not interested in hurting myself or, you know, looking for abuse that I don’t need to go through, but also with something like this you can’t really be too soft on yourself.”

Gugino said it took ‘maybe a day or two’ to shoot the scene, adding: “There was a lot of sweat and blood in that whole section… It was just about getting in there and really going for it and seeing what we could get away with and how much I could handle.”
