Channel 4 criticised by viewers for ‘uncomfortable’ Chris McCausland decision on Big Fat Quiz of the Year

big fat quiz year

Viewers were concerned for Chris McCausland after branding Channel 4’s Big Fat Quiz of the Year ‘uncomfortable’.

Some Channel 4 viewers were disappointed after tuning into watch the annual quiz show – hosted by Jimmy Carr.

Celebrities were invited on to compete in pairs to test their knowledge of the biggest news, sport and pop culture moments of 2024, but one guest was put at a disadvantage.

Strictly Come Dancing champion Chris McCausland was invited onto the show, but viewers have said that Channel 4 did a bad job of making the quiz accessible for him.

The blind comedian was paired with Maisie Adam, and they were up against Richard Ayoade, Katherine Ryan, Rob Beckett, and Judi Love.

Several questions throughout the quiz required the contestants to study pictures and videos, which had to be explained to Chris.

And host Jimmy even acknowledged how unfair the visual round was.

He said: “We are about to have what I can only describe as a very insensitive round Chris…it’s time for Say What You See.”

Rob said: “Just write nothing and you’ll get points.”

Richard noted that he loved ‘how flexible the format is’.

But despite not being able to see the visual cues, Chris was the first celebrity guest to guess the picture round correctly, with his teammate Maisie being ‘his eyes’ for the round.

And although the comedian didn’t seem to care about the lack of inclusivity, viewers were not happy about it.

Taking to X, one fan said: “Anyone else watching #bigfatquiz and wondering why it’s so inaccessible for Chris? They could’ve made very minor changes to the format (like less picture questions) and it wouldn’t even be noticeable.”

Another said: “Quite uncomfortable with how little #BigFatQuiz has been adapted for Chris.”

A third added: “[This seems] to be a total lack of making this accessible for Chris.

“Why invite a disabled panellist if you’re not going to make any necessary adaptions to the format?”

LADbible has contacted Channel 4 for a comment.

Despite being the Strictly champ this year with Dianne Buswell, him and Maisie came last in the annual quiz.

It was eventually won by Rob and Judie with a score of 45, followed by Richard and Katherine with 41, and Maisie and Chris with 40.

Speaking to the Metro about his time on the dancing show, he said: “I wanted to be able to represent not just people who are blind but people with a disability in a positive way that was ‘look what is possible’ rather than what is not, and we’ve done that more than I had hoped we could have.”
