‘Darkest’ show on Cartoon Network still terrifies ‘scarred’ fans 25 years on

courage the cowardly dog still scares people

People on social media have been transported back to their childhood after being reminded of an eerie Cartoon Network show.

Growing up, many of us spent our time watching cartoons and getting ridiculously excited about our favorite shows coming on TV.

But there was one show on Cartoon Network that was both beloved and horrifying.

Somehow, it managed to be both hilarious and terrifying in just the right amount for your child brain.

But thanks to a viral social media post, fans have been reflecting on the cartoon classic and have admitted it still gives them chills.

We are, of course, talking about the show none other than Courage the Cowardly Dog.

The premise was brilliantly simple and yet captivating all the same, with the general story explained in the show’s intro.

It pretty much boils down to a pink dog, named Courage, that must face his fears and protect his owners, Muriel and Eustace Bagge, from every manor of terrifying creature.

The children’s show is described as a ‘comedy horror’, created by John R. Dilworth and first hit screens in late 1999.

The clip of the show that has started doing the rounds on social media shows a scary looking dog with razor sharp teeth abusing and comforting a pink rabbit. Seemingly showing an abusive relationship between the two while Courage watches on.

While this seemed rather adult subject matter for a kids TV show, many people remarked that the show regularly had pretty dark and scary episodes.

One person commented: “One of the darkest episodes from a kids show ever.”

Another added: “I used to love tf outta this show and be scared of it at the same time.”

A third commented: “I liked this show as a kid, but only as an adult, I’ve really grown to respect how twisted this show dared to be.”

With another noting: “Sometimes I think about watching this series with my adult eyes but every time I see a clip I’m basically just a kid again, still a scary as hell show.

And another wrote: “This episode hit hard considering i know people that are this lvl of toxic and scary.

“I remember as a teen my thought was “Jesus they cross this line? IN A KIDS SHOW?! they got cojones…”

“Courage the cowardly dog will always be 1 of my main favorite CN cartoon.”

So, if you fancy a disturbing trip down memory lane you can check the show out again. But then again, if you scare easily, maybe not.
