David Lynch has died aged 78, his family have announced.

The American filmmaker is best known for films like Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive as well as the popular TV series, Twin Peaks.

The legendary director-writer’s work typically featured surrealist, dreamlike qualities and he picked up a number of awards across his 58-year career. In 2006, Lynch received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement and an Honorary Academy Award in 2019.

His death was announced on his Facebook page by his family with the following statement: “It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch.

“We would appreciate some privacy at this time.

“There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ … It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.”

In the summer of 2024, Lynch revealed that he has suffering from emphysema after several years as a smoker and said he was unable to leave his home due to the fear he would get Covid-19.

Then in November, the filmmaker revealed he required supplemental oxygen to be able to walk.

However, despite his health struggle, he said he would ‘never retire’ and if necessary, would direct remotely.
