The first responder on scene after Tupac has fatally shot revealed the two words the rapper spoke to him as he lay dying.
It’s nearly 30 years since the legendary rapper – full name Tupac Shakur – was fatally shot after watching Bruce Seldon vs. Mike Tyson in Las Vegas.
Following the bout, Shakur had exited the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas and was heading to a nightclub when he was fatally shot by an assailant who’d pulled up next to his car and opened fire.
Shakur was shot several times, including in the twice in the chest, and following this the rapper was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died from internal bleeding at the age of 25.
One of the first people on the scene after the rapper was shot was retired Las Vegas Police Officer Chris Carroll, who held the ‘California Love’ hitmaker in his arms as he was dying.
Carroll has since shared his recollection of events from the night in question, revealing the two words the rapper spoke to him.
Recalling the chaos at the scene, Carroll explained that Shakur was bleeding so badly that he couldn’t even tell where he’d been hit, while the rapper’s driver and associate Suge Knight was also sporting an injury after being grazed by a bullet near his head.
“I looked at him [Shakur] and I was like ‘This guy’s probably gonna die’ I could tell by looking at him, it was a bad situation,” he said in a 2023 interview with The Art Of Dialogue.
Carroll then went on to see if he could get the rapper to name his assailant as a ‘dying declaration’ (something which could later be used in court), however, the rapper didn’t immediately answer.
Shakur would eventually acknowledge the officer but did not name his attacker, instead offering a brief two-word response.
Recalling the exact moment Shakur spoke his final words, Carroll said: “I go ‘Who shot you, who did this’ and he’s trying to get a breath together and he’s looking at me and I was like ‘he’s actually going to tell me’ and he looked at me and said ‘F**k you’.”
“That would be his last words that he ever said,” Carroll added.
Shakur was later taken to University Medical Centre Of Southern Nevada, where he would die six days later on 13 September 1996 after his mother made the decision to have him removed from life-support.
In 2023, Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis was arrested and charged with first degree murder, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
During the trial in October, rapper E.D.I Mean, who was also in the car at the time of the murder, said he went to the car after the shooting to see what had happened when Shakur told him: “Get on the ground, they’re going to shoot you.”
Davis’ trial has been pushed to 17 March 2025.
