There are a number of recognisable names and faces who face the prospect of spending the rest of their lives behind bars.
History shows no shortage of famous faces who have committed reprehensible acts and faced justice for them, and while some of them were able to live a life of fame and fortune for years after they did what got them convicted, they have ended up behind bars.
Ryan Grantham – Murder
When he was 21 the Supernatural, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Riverdale actor Ryan Grantham shot his 64-year-old mother Barbara Waite in the back of the head while she was playing the piano.
In the hours following the murder of his mother he drank alcohol, smoked marijuana and then loaded up a car with guns and Molotov cocktails with the intention of assassinating Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau.
He drove for over 100 miles before turning around and going to a police station in Vancouver where he confessed to murdering his mother.
Grantham pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment, with him having to spend at least 14 years in prison before he becomes eligible for parole.
Danny Masterson – Rape
The That 70s Show actor Danny Masterson was in 2023 sentenced to spend 30 years to life in prison after being found guilty of raping two women.
Prosecutors argued that the actor had relied on his position as a Scientologist to avoid accountability for his actions, and after a jury was unable to reach a verdict during his first trial in 2022, he was found guilty in a re-trial the following year.
Three women had testified that he sexually assaulted them at his home in Hollywood between 2001 and 2003, and he was found guilty in two of the three cases.
The judge imposed a sentence of 30 years to life, the maximum possible sentence it would have been possible to hand down.
Harvey Weinstein – Rape
The accusations made against film producer Harvey Weinstein were a major part of the #MeToo movement as over 80 people came forward to claim rape and misconduct on his part.
There had been people speaking about Weinstein for years before formal accusations were made, and he was sentenced to spend 23 years in prison for a count of criminal sexual assault in the first degree and rape in the third degree after a trial in New York.
At a trial in Los Angeles, he was then sentenced to 16 years in prison after being found guilty of one count of rape and two counts of sexual assault.
After his New York conviction was overturned he faces a retrial and has pleaded not guilty.
R Kelly – Child sexual abuse
In 2022, the singer R Kelly received a 30 year sentence for charges of sex trafficking and racketeering, and later also received a 20 year sentence three charges of producing child sexual abuse images and three charges of enticement of minors for sex at a separate trial in Chicago.
He will serve 19 of those 20 years concurrently with his 30 year sentence, meaning that his overall sentence will end up being 31 years behind bars.
Statements from his victims were given at a hearing, with the identities of the women hidden to protect them.
One woman said: “With every addition of a new victim you grew in wickedness, cockiness, diminishing any form of humanity or self-awareness, which soon became the breeding ground for your God-like complex.
“You were doing, saying and encouraging despicable things that no one should be doing. We reclaim our names from beneath the shadows of your afflicted trauma.”
Another woman said: “You are an abuser, you are shameless, you are disgusting.”
Michael Jace – Murder
Viewers of crime drama The Shield will have seen Michael Jace on their screens plenty of times, but in 2014 he was arrested after confessing to shooting his wife April dead.
In 2016 he was found guilty of second degree murder and sentenced to 40 years to life imprisonment, with prosecutors telling the court that the actor was unhappy that she wanted a divorce and he believed she was seeing someone else.
When April returned home on 19 May, 2014 he shot her in the back and twice more in the legs in front of their sons, who were aged eight and five at the time.
After murdering his wife, the actor called the police and his father-in-law.
