Kathy Bates rips up acceptance speech after not winning Golden Globe

In a way, just getting nominated makes you a real winner because even if you didn’t get to go on stage and clutch that fancy statue, you still got invited to the shindig.

At least I hope that’s what the plethora of celebrities who were nominated for the Golden Globes but had to hear someone else’s name be called out are thinking.

The awards ceremony has already decided on the winner before everybody shows up for the night, so the organisers know that many of the hopefuls striding down the red carpet to find their table inside are already going to walk away empty handed.

Well, not quite.

Those goodie bags and the various things you can get inside them are pretty damn valuable, but the people who attend the ceremony have probably still prepared themselves for the possibility of winning an award.

That can include a fancy speech filled with kind words for all those who helped you get where you are, and some well-earned digs at the people who said you’d never make it after all.

Last night at the Golden Globes, Kathy Bates rather summed up how not to win an award with class as she’d been up for the Best Actress – Television Series Drama gong for Matlock.

However, it was a tough bunch of nominees to beat and the award ultimately went to Anna Sawai for her part in FX’s Shōgun.

With the cameras trained on all of the nominees everyone’s reactions were captured as the rest applauded Sawai’s award win, but just before the footage focused on Sawai, viewers could see Bates pull a funny face and rip up the speech she was holding.

Alas, we shall never know what it was she was going to say if she’d won and all the effort that went into writing her acceptance speech ultimately came to naught.

However, it won’t be her last opportunity to win the award as while the 76-year-old said that she was going to retire from acting once Matlock was done, a new series has been commissioned.

Fortunately, everybody got that she ripped up her speech in jest and there seemed to be no ill will between the various nominees.

Bates also already has a couple of Golden Globes from her parts in Misery and The Late Shift.

Elsewhere in the Golden Globes, people enjoyed Sofia Vergara heckling Jodie Foster and asking if she could have a turn winning the award this time.

Meanwhile, Fast and Furious fans thought that there was tension between Vin Diesel and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson at the ceremony.
