Warning: this article contains spoilers for Squid Game Season 2
Netflix has officially confirmed the release date for Squid Game’s highly anticipated final season.
While fans had to wait just over three years for the release of the hugely popular Netflix series’ second season, fans won’t have to wait so long for the third instalment.
Squid Game season one dropped in September 2021, with its latest becoming available on Boxing Day 2024.
Then, in an apparent faux pas by Netflix Korea, it was revealed when Netflix subscribers will be able to watch the third – and final – season.
The date has previously been teased by Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, with him telling Variety last month: “After Season 2 launches, I believe we will be announcing the launch date for Season 3 soon.”
In regards to the final seasons storyline, Dong-hyuk said: “You’re going to meet our character Gi-hun at a very critical crossroads as we begin the third season. Gi-hun will not be the man he was in Season 2.”
And now, Netflix has officially confirmed when the third season will debut on the streaming platform.
The third and final season will drop on June 27, 2025.
The streaming giant said in a press release: “Netflix’s most popular series Squid Game returns with its last round in 2025. The third and final season of Squid Game follows Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) after losing his best friend in the game and being driven to utter despair by The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), who was hiding his true identity to infiltrate the game.
“Gi-hun persists with his goal to put an end to the game, while the Front Man continues onto his next move and the surviving players’ choices will lead to graver consequences with each round.”
The release continued: “The world eagerly awaits to see the grand finale written and directed by Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who has vowed to bring the epic story to its deserved closure. Can we hope for humanity in the cruelest of realities? Fans all over the world are counting the days until the final answer is revealed.”
Netflix has also shared a first-look at the poster for Season 3, which sees Player 241 being dragged by a guard into a body-sized box with a large pink bow on it.
Meanwhile, the pair are surrounded by a sea of orange and white flowers.
“Prepare for the final game,” the poster reads.
Ahead of the final season’s release, Hwang Dong-hyuk promised fans that ‘with each episode it’s going to get better’.
