People are raving about a non-alcoholic drink that promises give you a ‘gentle buzz’ without the dreaded hangover – and it’s legally available to buy.

The brainchild of Professor David Nutt and his team, the non-alcoholic drinks from Sentia Spirits are designed to be an ‘effective alternative to drinking low levels of alcohol’. In order to replicate the hard stuff, the drinks essentially trick the brain’s internal chemistry into thinking it’s tipsy.

In an interview with The Independent, Professor Nutt explained: “It’s a drink that is based on the science of alcohol, particularly the low doses of alcohol that relax you and make you more sociable.”

The drinks seem to do the trick too with hundreds of glowing reviews on Amazon. “I bought these drinks to reduce my alcohol intake but still wanted the relaxed feeling,” one five-star review reads. “Well, it works! Fantastic!”

Another shopper shared, “Definitely got a buzz, felt smiley and chilled almost immediately and stayed that way for quite a while. Felt fine the next morning too.”

A third added, “A gentle buzz and a nice new addition to the drinks cabinet.”

So, how do the non-alcoholic drinks work?

According to Professor Nutt, the drinks in question are what are known as GABA spirits. GABA, formally referred to as gamma-aminobutyric acid, is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain.

Sentia drinks essentially activate this neurotransmitter in a similar way that a glass of wine or beer would and in turn, help you to feel relaxed. The only difference? Unlike alcohol, you won’t be able to get drunk on them, but with any luck you’ll feel a ‘buzz’.

The non-alcoholic GABA spirits work in a similar way to CBD drinks, as these also use neurotransmitters in the brain to stimulate a relaxing effect. The only difference is that Sentia delivers a stronger impact.
