Cereal is a breakfast staple for millions of Americans, but one nutritionist has warned doing such is ‘one of worst things’ you could do.
Whether it be Cheerios, Coco Puffs, Special K or Frosted Flakes, there are plenty of cereal options to choose from before the morning commute to the office.
However, you may want to rethink that food choice as an expert has been speaking about the potential health risks of having cereal for that first meal of the day.
Why is cereal not recommended at breakfast time?
Biochemist Jessie Inchauspe, who specialises in glucose health, says that eating foods containing too much of the sugary substitute leads to our body releasing insulin to remove it.
The glucose not required is then stored away as either glycogen or fat, with a spike in the sugar substitute hurting ‘our body’s ability to make energy efficiently, makes us tired, and kicks off all kinds of side effects’.
The expert went on to explain that, even though we can get a bit of a buzz and even a sugar rush from having cereals in the morning, such science going on inside our bodies can lead to cravings throughout the day and makes us feel a lot hungrier.
“That breakfast will also deregulate our glucose levels for the rest of the day, so our lunch and dinner in turn will create bigger spikes,” she said.
What’s a good substitute for cereal at breakfast time?
So, what’s a good substitute for cereal at the breakfast bar?
Well, Jessie suggests opting for a savoury breakfast alongside some protein, fibre and fat, instead of the usual glucose intake.
In terms of foods, you could look at an omelette with avocado, for example.
Experts have previously discussed why cereals are not a good option for breakfast, no matter how delicious they may be.
The majority of cereal options have a lot of sugar in it, with increased sugar intake is also linked to rising levels of obesity, as well as inconsistent energy levels.
‘Health washing’ it with descriptors like ‘low calorie’ or ‘high fibre’ is a way to make the product more appealing, along with those big colourful packets and amusing advertising campaigns.
And, of course, you’ve also got the stupendous taste.
But in reality, experts state frequent cereal consumption is certainly not good for you.
Even though everything in moderation is a good rule to follow, it might be time to switch out your favorite cereal for some toast and avocado.
