Netflix is about to deliver a serious dose of nostalgia when it adds a beloved US sitcom to its catalogue this week.
Subscribers are raving about the streamer’s recent slew of additions, which include a ‘new instant favorite’ TV series with a 97 percent Rotten Tomatoes score and an ‘outstanding 10/10’ mini-series that fans have watched in one day.
Although, quite understandably, they were pretty shaken up after learning this week Breaking Bad is leaving the platform in 2027…
Anyway, this 90s family sitcom has been hailed ‘truly entertaining and extremely funny’ by fans.
Running for a total of eight seasons – that’s 204 episodes – it makes for the perfect binge-watch.
And while this show is, in fact, already streaming on Disney+, this weekend marks the first time ever it’s been available on Netflix.
It joins the world’s biggest streamer for 18 months alongside 13 other Disney titles as part of a non-exclusive licensing agreement between the companies, as reported by Deadline in December 2023.
The show stars Tim Allen as handyman Tim Taylor, who’s juggling his family and professional life – which are equally as chaotic.
Taylor’s antics often involve his wife Jill (Patricia Richardson) as well as sons Brad, Randy, and Mark (portrayed by Zachery Ty Bryan, Jonathan Taylor Thomas. and Taran Noah Smith respectively).
Tim also hosts whacky home renovation show Tool Time alongside co-host Al (Richard Karn) and Tool Time girl Lisa (Pamela Anderson).
The show – Home Improvement, of course! – was a hit, earning multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations during its ABC run.
Despite ending in 1999, fans still love to rewatch it.
Taking to Rotten Tomatoes, one viewer declared Home Improvement ‘one of the most hilarious shows I’ve ever seen,’ as a second admitted: “One of the few series I’ll watch again every several years, start to finish.”
A third lamented: “Such a wholesome family show [the likes of which] we don’t see anymore,” as another agreed: “It was a show aimed at both adults and children (something you don’t see much now)”.
Allen has since teased a reboot of the fan-favorite series, telling Entertainment Tonight in 2018 that other cast members had told him that it ‘would be cool to do it years later, like Roseanne.’
Could Home Improvement joining Netflix be hinting at the start of a new era for the show? Only time will tell…
Home Improvement will begin streaming on Netflix from Saturday February 1. The show will still continue to play on Disney+.
